Method and apparatus for detection of entities in an environment

Abstract : The position and optionally speed and/or size of an entity such as a vehicle in an environment such as an airport, motorway, shipping port or the like may be determined by monitoring a plurality of light sources for occlusion. These light sources may be arbitrary light sources as provided in the environment for unrelated purposes. On the basis of the known location of the light sources and the imaging devices by means of which of the light sources are monitored, as well as knowledge of the orientation and field of view characteristics of the imaging devices, and in some cases of other physical constraints imposed on the movement of vehicles in the environment, the position of a entity can be deduced.
